Beyond Greenock

Half an hour from Glasgow by train, on the road to Largs and the Ayrshire coast, where the Clyde, winding its way to the sea, begins gradually to expand its bed, there lies, at the bottom of a vale, as small harbor town that appears to be eternally shrouded in dark and ominous clouds, as if banished from the blissful promise of summer warmth.
